SafeLocal is an application created by Johns Hopkins University to assist anesthesiologists, surgeons, and medical providers in efficiently calculating safe dosages of local anesthetics. It streamlines the process by factoring patient weight, disease conditions, local anesthetic compositions, and the presence of additives to determine the maximum safe dose without the need for manual calculations. Moreover, it monitors the usage of the safe dose, providing real-time information on how much has been administered and how much remains for safe application.
FEATURES:
- Dosage calculator accommodating diverse local anesthetics, including intricate mixtures and unconventional concentrations.
- Adjustment of maximum safe dose based on patient weight (lbs or kg).
- Option to choose between anesthesia with or without epinephrine.
- Incorporation of comorbidities such as extreme age, severe renal dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, or advanced heart failure, with automatic modification of maximum safe dosage.
- Capability to compute the remaining safe anesthesia dose for anesthesiologists or surgeons based on the quantity already administered.
The calculations are derived from Chapter 36 (Local Anesthesia) of Miller’s Anesthesia, 8th Edition. The adjustments for comorbidities are based on the 2004 study "Maximum Recommended Doses of Local Anesthetics: A Multifactorial Concept" by Rosenberg et al.
The guidance provided by the application is founded on expert opinion and should be viewed as a suggestion. The use of clinical judgment by a qualified physician is imperative in all circumstances. The user bears full responsibility for decisions made using this app's information.
This project was developed at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine by Jonathan D. Lin, M.D., and Jean-Pierre P. Ouanes, D.O., generously funded by the Johns Hopkins Bayview Patient Safety Pyramid Grant Program.
